Adhkaar

Amat Al-Kareem July 11, 2011 12

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem

With Ramadaan fast approaching (approximately 20 days left SubhanAllaah) I pray that all have been utilising their time wisely to prepare InshaAllaah. A short reminder about the importance of adhkaar (remembrance of Allaah). There are many ayah’s/hadiths which stress the importance of adkhaar. Allaah tells us in the Qur’aan that:

“Those who believe (in the Oneness of Allaah – Islamic Monotheism), and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allaah, Verily, in the remembrance of Allaah do hearts find rest.” 1

Narrated in Bayhaqi, our Prophet (peace and blessing of Allaah be upon him) said:

“For everything there is a polish and the polish for the hearts is the remembrance of Allaah.” 2

Ibn al Qayyim said:

“Remembrance strengthens both heart and body. Remembrance brings provision.”

The Prophet (peace and blessing of Allaah be upon him) said :

“The people of Paradise will not be sorry for anything except for the moments (in this life) that passed by in which they did not remember Allaah, Most High.” 3

Remembering Allaah in one’s heart means thinking about the signs of Allaah, loving Him, venerating Him, turning in repentance to Him, fearing Him, putting one’s trust in Him, and other actions of the heart. Remembering Allaah with one’s tongue or physical actions without remembering Him in one’s heart is a serious shortcoming; it is like a body without a soul.

There are three situations where it is recommeneded to recite adhkaar and that is:

  • After Salaah
  • Morning
  • Evening

Now the list of what can be recited is huge, Allaahu Akbar! Such is the Mercy of Our Lord, He gives us so much and they very least we can do is implement it InshaAllaah. Now rather than posting a whole list we hoped that you could join us in learning and implementing these adhkaar. The aim is that every few days new adhkaar will be posted as a comment below. Therefore we have some time to learn and implement them and then slowly we can build up the adkhaar we recite from one after salaah to two after salaah to three etc.

The important thing to remember is to have sincerity in our intentions, our aim should be to learn these adhkaar purely for the sake of attaining Allaah’s pleasure and He will make it easy for us InshaAllaah.

  • After Salaah

The Sunnah is for the Muslim to say after every obligatory prayer:

1)      Astaghfirullaah (I ask Allaah for forgiveness) three times

2)      Then Allaahumma antas salaamu wa minkas salaamu tabaarakta ya dhaa’l-jalaali wa’l-ikraam (O Allaah, You are the One Who is free from all defects and deficiencies and from You is all peace, blessed are You, O Possessor of majesty and honour).

The Sunnah is for the Imam, the person who prays on his own and the person who prays behind an imam to recite these adhkaar out loud after every obligatory prayer in a moderate voice that is not too loud, in an ordinary tone.

It is proven in al-Saheehayn from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that raising the voice in dhikr when the people have finished the obligatory prayer was what was done at the time of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him). Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: I would know that they had finished when I heard that.

  • Morning and Evening

1)      “Reciting ‘Qul Huwa Allaahu Ahad’ and al-Mu’wadhatayn [the last two surahs of the Qur’aan] three times in the evening and in the morning will protect you against everything.” 4

2)      It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said:  “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘Whoever says morning and evening, Subhaan Allaah wa bihamdih (Glory and praise be to Allaah)’ one hundred times, no one will come on the Day of Resurrection with anything better than him, except for one who said the same as he said, or who said more.’ 5

Adhkaar is not just restricted to these three situations, there are du’as that are said before eating, before sleeping, upon waking, upon leaving one’s homes, upon entering the home, upon entering the bathroom, upon leaving the bathroom. The list is vast SubhanAllaah. A compact book that contains many of these du’as is the Fortress of a Muslim, it is small and therefore very easy to carry around if one would like to do so Alhamdulillaah.

Let’s all work towards increasing and sustaining this increased remembrance of Our Lord.

For Allaah says: “And the men and women who remember Allaah frequently, Allaah has prepared for them forgiveness and great reward.” 6

Footnotes:

  1. Ar-Ra’d 13:28
  2. Bayhaqi relates it from Ibn ‘Umar
  3. Recorded in at-Tabarani
  4. Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, al-Da’waat, 3499. It was classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh Sunan al-Tirmidhi, no. 2829
  5. Narrated by Muslim, al-Dhikr wa’l-Du’aa’, 2692

    Morning Thikr:

From the greatest of athkaar for the morning comes the statement,

''Laa ilaaha illAllaah wahdahu laa shareekalah, lahul mulku walahul hamdu wa huwa 'alaa kulli shay in qadeer''

''None has the right to be worshipped but Allaah alone, Who has no partner. To Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise and He is able to do all things.''

Whether we are ill, low in Eemaan, travelling or whatever it may be, let this be one of the athkaar that we strive to never miss on a daily basis as part of our morning nourishment because,

''The one who recites this 100 times a day will have the reward of freeing ten slaves. 100 hasanaat (rewards) will be written for him and 100 misdeeds will be washed away. He will be shielded from shaytaan until the evening. No one will be able to present anything better than this except for someone who has recited more than this.'' [Bukhari and Muslim]

Taken from the Hisnul Muslim. May Allaah reward the compilers of Hisnul Muslim greatly, imagine how they'll find mountains of good on the Day of Judgement , confused at the large size they will find out this is due to the good deeds that came back to them from all those who used their books. SubhanAllaah.

Whatever the case, the students of knowledge, they strongly advise to never miss this for this is what their teachers advised in some cases after being seriously affected by evil eye or magic.

And Allaah is the source of Protection, no harm touches the servant unless He wills.

Everybody who reads this comment, start to apply it InshaAllaah for you are now one without an excuse.

    Adhkaar after Salaah:

Following what is described in the post:

Then he should turn to face the people if he was the imam, then he and the other worshippers, and similarly the one who prayed on his own should say: Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah wahdahu laa shareeka lah, lahu’l-mulk wa lahu’l-hamd wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadeer. Allaahumma laa maani’ lima a’tayta wa laa mu’ti lima mana’ta wa la yanfa’ dhaa’l-jadd minka al-jadd (There is no god but Allaah Alone, with no partner or associate His is the sovereignty and to Him be praise, and He is Able to do all things. There is no power and no strength except with Allaah, and we worship none but Him. From Him (alone) come all blessings and favours, and all good praise is due to Him. There is no god but Allaah and we make our worship purely for Him (alone) however much the disbelievers may hate that. O Allaah, none can withhold what You give and none can give what You withhold, and no wealth or majesty can benefit anyone for from You is all wealth and majesty).

After Maghrib and Fajr prayer he should say, as well as the words mentioned above: Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah wahdahu laa shareeka lah, lahu’l-mulk wa lahu’l-hamd yuhyi wa yumeet wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadeer (there is no God but Allaah alone, with no partner or associate, His is the Dominion and to Him be praise, He gives life and gives death, and He has power over all things)ten times.

It is not permissible to recite out loud in unison; rather each person should recite to himself without paying attention to the voice of anyone else, because reciting dhikr in unison is an innovation for which there is no basis in Islam.

    Morning Adhkaar:

Allaahumma bika asbahna, wa bika amsayna, wa bika nahya, wa bika namutu wa ilaykan-nushur.

(O Allaah by You we enter the morning and by You we enter the evening, by You we live and by You we die, and to you is the resurection)

    Evening Adhkaar:

Allaahumma bika amsayna, wa bika asbahna, wa bika nahya, wa bika namutu wa ilaykal-masir.

(O Allaah, by You we enter the evening and by You we enter the morning, by You we live and by You we die, and to You is the Final Return)

    [Tirmidhi]

    Bismillaah

I pray everyone is well and doing their utmost in increasing their good deeds and practises especially as Ramadaan is literally around the corner!! SubhanAllaah! Everyone been memorising and implementing du’as? May Allaah reward you all greatly for the effort put in Aameen.

    Adhkaar after Salaah continued…

Then after that he should say:

Subhaan Allaah wa’l-hamdu Lillaah wa Allaahu akbar (Glory be to Allaah, praise be to Allaah and Allaah is most great) 33 times, and to complete one hundred he should say:

Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah wahdahu laa shareeka lah, lahu’l-mulk wa lahu’l-hamd wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadeer.

(There is no god but Allaah Alone, with no partner or associate His is the sovereignty and to Him be praise, and He is Able to do all things).

Then it is prescribed for the imam, the people praying behind an imam and the one who is praying alone to recite Aayat al-Kursiy silently, then for each of them to recite Qul Huwa Allaahu Ahad, Qul a’oodhu bi Rabbi’l-Falaq and Qul a’oodhu bi Rabbi’l-Naas [i.e., the last three soorahs of the Qur’aan] silently.

After Maghrib and Fajr one should repeat Qul Huwa Allaahu Ahad, Qul a’oodhu bi Rabbi’l-Falaq and Qul a’oodhu bi Rabbi’l-Naas three times.

This is the best because of the soundness of the reports that indicate all that we have stated above.

Perhaps you could use the Hisn. It can be downloaded by right clicking and saving the following link:

    http://bit.ly/pNc9a1

Or alternatively use http://arabic-keyboard.org to type. However, when you paste it into word, wallaahu 'alam but we found sometimes the harakaat look weird.

To add, to get the arabic into word from the PDF you could simply screenshot and crop or and walhamdulillaah for this new facility, if you have windows 7 you can use the snipping tool to extract the part you need.
