Know O servant of Allaah, and may His Mercy envelope us all, that Allaah out of His divine wisdom, He has made the language of this Deen to be Arabic – no language is better, no language is more suited, no language is more eloquent than what He Jalla Jalaaluh Has chosen. This language is the best of languages for the people, and He Jalla wa ‘Ala has made it easy for them.
He Jalla wa ‘Ala says:
And We have indeed made the Qur’aan easy to understand and remember; then is there any one who will remember (or receive admonition)? [Al-Qamar 54:17]
And:
Alif-Lam-Ra. These are the Verses of the Clear Book. Verily, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’aan in order that you may understand. [Yusuf 12:1-2]
In order for the students seeking knowledge of His deen, and may Allaah aid the servants on this path, to truly attain in-depth and fruitful understanding of what Allaah and His Prophet salallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam have sent then this tool, namely Arabic, must be studied.
Shaykh-ul-Islam ibn Taymiyyah informs us regarding the arabic language:
“The Arabic language itself is part of Islam, and knowing Arabic is an obligatory duty. If it is a duty to understand the Qur‘aan and Sunnah, and they cannot be understood without knowing Arabic, then the means that is needed to fulfil the duty is also obligatory.
‘Isa Ibn Yunus told us from Thawri from ‘Umar Ibn Yazid that ‘Umar wrote to Abu Musa al-Ash’ari and said:
“Learn the Sunnah and learn Arabic; learn the Qur‘aan in Arabic for it is Arabic.”
According to another hadith narrated from ‘Umar [may Allaah be pleased with him], he said:
“Learn Arabic for it is part of your Religion…”
This command of ‘Umar, to learn Arabic and the Shari’a combines the things that are needed, for Religion involves understanding words and actions.
Understanding Arabic is the way to understand the words of Islam, and understanding the Sunnah is the way to understand the actions of Islam…” [1]
Below, our brother Bilal Abdul-Kareem, who after converting to Islam had made hijrah to Egypt, informs us of the importance of studying the Arabic language and provides some very beneficial advice regarding its study.
We ask Allaah to preserve our brother Bilal and increase him on this path of knowledge. Aameen.
