Caged Birds

Cry of the Caged Bird

Beyond the mask and beyond the front.

Beyond the name and beyond the image.

Beyond the rhyme and beyond the prose.

Beyond the metaphors and beyond the rhetoric.

Beyond the campaign and beyond the publicity.

Beyond the words and beyond the speeches…

There is a caged bird.

There is a caged bird whose only wish is to be a bird again.

There is a caged bird that yearns to fly free again

And soar over the mountain tops and glide through the valleys.

There is a caged bird that is no better than any other bird

And no different to any other bird.

There is a caged bird whose wings have been cut and voice has been muted

Whose only desire is to be a bird again.

That’s why the caged bird sings.

    In al-Siyar (11/238), al-Dhahabi reports from Abu Ja'far al-Anbaari:

When Ahmad was taken to al-Ma'moon, I was told about it, so I crossed the Euphrates and found him sitting in an inn, where I greeted him. He said, "O Abu Ja'far, why did you go to the trouble (of coming here)" I said, "Listen to me, today you are the leader and the people are following you. By Allaah, if you accept that the Qur'aan is created, a lot of people will go along with that, but if you do not, then neither will they. Even if this man (al-Ma'moon) does not kill you, you will still die, because death is inevitable, so fear Allaah, and do not go along with (al-Ma'moon).? Ahmad began to weep and said, "Ma sha Allaah" Then he said, "O Abu Ja'far, say it again,' so I said it again, and he kept saying, "Ma sha Allaah."

Ibn Abi Du’ad came to Ahmad and said, ‘O Ahmad, say in my ear: ‘The Qur’an is created,’ so that I may save you from the hand of the Caliph.’ So Imam Ahmad said to him, “O Ibn Abi Du’ad, say in my ear: ‘The Qur’an is the Speech of Allaah, it is not created,’ so that I save you from the punishment of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic!!”

    ["Al-Manhaj Al-Ahmad", 1/35]

Ibn Taymiyyah is reported to have said 'The real prisoner is someone whose heart is imprisoned from his Lord; the true captive is someone captured by his passions.' And when he entered the fortress in which he was imprisoned in and was inside its walls, he gazed upon them and recited the verse, 'And a wall between them is struck which has a gate. On the inside there is a mercy, on the outside punishment.'

May Allaah have mercy on the muslims, ameen.
