Alhamdulillaahi Rabb al-’Alameen, Was Salaatu was Salaam ‘ala rasoolillaah wa ‘ala aalihee wa Sahbihee wa manwala wa Ba’d

Short but very beneficial lecture MashaAllaah

Allaah has made patience like a horse that never gets tired, an army that can never be defeated and a strong fortress that can never be breached. Patience and victory are twin brothers, for victory comes with patience, relief comes with distress and ease comes with hardship. Patience is of more help to the one who has it than men, as it helps without any need for equipment or numbers and its relationship to victory is like that of the head to the body.

Al-Bukhaari (1496) and Muslim (1053) narrated that Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“…whoever is patient Allaah will bestow patience upon him, and no one is ever given anything better and more generous than patience.”

And Muslim (918) narrated that Umm Salamah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessing of Allaah be upon him) say:

“There is no Muslim who is stricken with a calamity and says what Allaah has enjoined – ‘Verily to Allaah we belong and unto Him is our return. O Allaah, reward me for my affliction and compensate me with something better’ – but Allaah will compensate him with something better.”

And Muslim (2999) narrated that Suhayb (may Allaah be pleased with him)said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“How wonderful is the affair of the believer, for his affairs are all good, and this applies to no one but the believer. If something good happens to him, he is thankful for it and that is good for him. If something bad happens to him, he bears it with patience and that is good for him.”

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allaah than the weak believer, although both are good. Strive to do that which will benefit you and seek the help of Allaah, and do not feel helpless. If anything befalls you, do not say ‘If only I had done (such and such), the such and such would have happened,’ rather say: ‘Allaah has decreed and what He wills He does,’ for ‘if only’ opens the door to the work of the shaytaan.”

[Narrated by Muslim (2664)]

[IslamQA]

May Allaah bestow upon us patience, Aameen. May Allaah make us victorious over those who wish to extinguish the light of Allaah, Aameen. Indeed, victory is only from Allaah. We ask you O Allaah for Your infinite Mercy and your help.

Hold on to the rope of Allaah, and you will make it. InshaAllaah

    Bismillahir rahmaanir raheem

subhan'allah. jazaakillahu khair for that beautiful vid, may allah [swt] reward u abundantly, aameen.

Al Hasan ibn Arafah narrated, “I visited Imaam Ahmad ibn Hanbal after he was whipped and tortured. I said to him, “O Abu Abdillaah, you have reached the station of the Prophets!” He said, “Keep quiet. Verily, I saw nothing more than people selling their Deen. And I saw scholars that were with me sell their Faith. So I said to myself, ‘Who am I? What am I? What am I going to say to Allah tomorrow when I stand in front of Him and He asks me, “Did you sell your Deen like the others did?”? So I looked at the whip and the sword and chose them. And I said, “If I die I shall return to Allah and say: ‘I was told to say that one of Your Characteristics was something created but I did not.’ After that, it will be upto Him – either to punish me or be Merciful on me.”

Al-Hasan ibn Arafah then asked, “Did you feel pain when they whipped you?” He said “Yes, I felt the pain up to 20 lashes then I lost all feeling (They whipped him over eighty times). After it was over I felt no pain and that day I prayed Dhuhr standing.”

Al-Hasan ibn Arafah started weeping when he heard what had happened. Imaam Ahmad questioned him, “Why are you crying? I did not lose my Eeman. After that why should I care if I lose my life.”

Subhan'Allah. Allahu akbar! May Allah have mercy on Imaam Ahmad, his conviction, sincerity, and mostly, his certainty, his certainty in Allah, subhan'Allah it's breathtaking. Indeed, wonderful is the affair of the believer, and Imaam Ahmad, masha'Allah tabarak'Allah is a true exemplary of that. May Allah have mercy on him and grant us just some of his many virtues, aameen. It was mentioned – a narration I read once, many years ago – his son asked him, 'O my father, when will we rest?' And imaam Ahmad replied, 'With the first steps we take into Jannah.' Subhan'Allah, that, that is certainty! Certainty [yaqeen] is a sublime station in the wayfaring to Allah, it encompasses many a great station and level [of conviction and faith in the heart] that precede it, including patience, gratitude, perseverance, love of Allah etc… i won't say much more right now because i won't do justice to it, but perhaps in time insha'Allah.

Jazaakillahu khairan for this wonderful post. I pray that many people will be encouraged to contribute to it, and increase the benefit it brings. Aameen.

    Wallahu 'alam

    Wassalaam

In one of Shaykh Muhammad Mukhtar al-Shanqiti’s tapes on ‘Yaqin’ (certainty), he mentions the story of a scholar who was once afflicted with poverty…

The scholar had just completed writing the tafseer of the Qur’an but due to his poor income, he was unable to publish his work. So he went and sought counsel from his brethren, students and teachers. They directed him to man who possessed much wealth and riches saying ‘Go to so-and-so, he’ll provide you with some money so you can publish your work.’

The scholar went and rented a ship, embarking on his journey and going by sea. However, it was by the Mercy and Divine Plan of Allah `azza wa jall that as he set off, he saw a man walking along the seashore. He ordered the captain of the ship to let this man get on and ride along with them. When the man got on, the scholar asked, ‘Who are you?’ He said, ‘I am so-and-so (mentioning his name).’ The man then asked, ‘Where are you going (i.e. where is the ship destined?).’ The scholar said, ‘I am going to so-and-so in search of his assistance in publishing my book.’ The man said, ‘I hear you have interpreted the Qur’an?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ The man said, ‘Subhan Allah, how did you interpret the statement of Allah `azza wa jall,

‘You [alone] do we worship and only in You do we seek Help.’

    [Surah al-Fatiha]

The scholar provided the man with the tafseer of the verse, but he understood the intent that lay behind the question. So he said to the captain of the ship, ‘Take me back to my house.’

May Allah have mercy upon him; despite his needy state, he returned to his house, but with his heart filled with certainty that Allah `azza wa jall would surely suffice him, take him out of this poverty and ease his affairs.

No more than 3 days had passed by when a man knocked on his door. He opened it and the man said, ‘I’ve come with a message from so-and-so. News has reached him that you have authored a tafseer of the Qur’an which he would like to see.’ Incredibly, this turned out to be the same man whom the scholar had set off to meet and get help from! So he gave the tafseer to the messenger who took it back with him. When the wealthy man read it, he was filled with amazement and admiration, causing him to return a pouch filled with gold and riches to the poor scholar.

    We should never forget…

‘A person has never held certainty in Allah `azza wa jall only for Allah to disappoint him.’ Never will Allah disappoint those with yaqeen (certainty), tawakkul (reliance) and husn al-dhann (good opinion) of Him.

perhaps one of my all time favourite stories, and without doubt one of my most favourite muslims, may Allah have mercy on him. A narration regarding Abdullah ibn al Mubarak, rahimahullah:

"He** related that 'Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak entered Kufa when he was intending to go on the hajj. There was a woman sitting on a rubbish-heap plucking a duck. It occurred to him that it was carrion. He stopped on his mule and said to her, 'Women! Is this duck carrion or sacrificed?' She said, 'Carrion.' He said, 'Then why are you plucking it?' She said, 'So that my family and I can eat it.' He said, 'Woman! Allah Almighty has forbidden you carrion while you are in a land like this!' She said, 'Man, go away.' They continued to exchange words until he said to her,'Where in Kufa do you live?' She said, 'In the quarter of the Banu so-and-so.' He said, 'By what is your house known?' She said, 'The Banu so-and-so.' He left her and went to the inn. Then he asked about the tribe and they directed him to it. He said to a man, 'You have a dirham if you come with me to the place.'

"He went until he came to the tribe which the woman had mentioned. He said to the man, 'Go.' Then he went to the door and knocked on the door with a stick that he had. The old woman said, 'Who is it?' He said to her, 'Open the door.' She opened it part way. He said, 'Open it all the way.' Then he got off his mule and hit it with the stick and the mule went into the house. Then he said to the woman, 'This mule and the provision, money and clothes on it is yours, and you will have what is halal from it in this world and the Next.'

"Then Ibn al-Mubarak remained hidden until the people returned from the hajj. Some of the people of his land came to him to greet him and congratualate him on the hajj. He turned to say to them, 'I had an illness and did not go on hajj this year.'

"One of them said, 'Glory be to Allah! Did I not leave you my goods with you while we were at Mina and we were going to 'Arafat?' Another said, 'Did you not buy for me in the same way?' He turned to say, 'I do not know what you are saying. As for myself, I did not go on hajj this year.'

"He dreamt of someone saying in the night to him, ''Abdullah, rejoice! Allah accepted your sadaqa and He sent an angel in your form who performed the hajj for you.'"

    subhan'Allah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

** I dunno who 'he' is, so don't ask.. could be the author, Qadi 'Iyad, Allah knows.

may allah [swt] accept this from me, and make it of benefit to u, aameen.
