As we wade through the history of man, we notice that certain themes or situations reoccur. One of those themes or situations is where a man arises at certain times, with a message commanding his people to worship and obey the one who created their father (Adam); the one who created the very Earth they walk on and the very sky they gaze upon. We are given the glad tidings of a life to come that is far greater than what this world has to offer. A reward for those who worship and obey the Lord of All that exists; and we are given warnings of a severe punishment for those who disobey the Creator and do injustice. In addition to this every Messenger and Prophet that has set foot on this Earth from Adam AS to Muhammad SAW warned man of an inevitable event of unspeakable horrors – the Day of Judgement. A Day man will rise from his grave and see every parent forsake their child. Friends will become enemies. Loved ones will turn their backs on one another. A Day whereby man will stand in front of his Lord with all that his hands have sent forth laid bare. Those who believed and did righteous good deeds will be relieved of the hardships to come but those who turned away and followed their vain desires will be engulfed in state of fear and humiliation. This is the Overwhelming Day.
Allaah in the Qur’aan warns man of this Day over and over again. It serves as a reminder that every action and every word will either be of benefit for us or be a witness against us. It gives life a meaning, a purpose, a basis for every moral principle. Those who deny this day or belittle it are submerged in a sea of materialism, corruption and heedlessness. The belief in the Day of Resurrection and Judgement is the only thing that makes sense in what seems like incomprehensible world we are in. In this life we witness justice and goodness and yet at the same time we witness injustice and evil on every level. Allaah has decreed that on this Day justice will be done; not a single person will be treated unfairly regardless if he or she did good or evil.
We must remind ourselves that on that Day the scores will be settled. A Day we will be held to account for every minor and major deed. A Day of compensation. A Day of punishment. We must utilise and take heed of the warnings given by Allaah and His Messenger and prepare for our standing on that Day.
A GLIMPSE OF THE DAY OF RESURRECTION
And the Trumpet will be blown (i.e. the second blowing) and behold from the graves they will come out quickly to their Lord. They will say: “Woe to us! Who has raised us up from our place of sleep.” (It will be said to them): “This is what the Most Gracious (Allaah) had promised, and the Messengers spoke truth!” It will be but a single Saihah (shout), so behold! They will all be brought up before Us! [Ya-Seen 36:51-53]
Imagine, that one day we will awaken from a deep slumber; the Earth split open for us. We rise in a state of confusion, shock and fear. We will emerge from the earth like the vegetation and plants being revived after rainfall:
And it is Allaah Who sends the winds, so that they raise up the clouds, and We drive them to a dead land, and revive therewith the earth after its death. As such (will be) the Resurrection! [Fatir 35:9]
We will say on that day, “woe to us! Who has raised us up from our place of sleep?” We will hurry out of our beds and witness mankind emerging from the Earth: “barefoot, naked and uncircumcised.”
…As We began the first creation, We shall repeat it, (it is) a promise binding upon Us. Truly, We shall do it. [Al-Anbiya 21:104]
The shock and fear of that day will be so heavy that no man will look at the naked woman and that no woman will look at the naked man. We will be gathered together and no one will be exempted from the standing. We will stand alongside those who came before us and those who were us and those who came after us.
And (remember) the Day We shall cause the mountains to pass away (like clouds of dust), and you will see the earth as a levelled plain, and we shall gather them all together so as to leave not one of them behind. [Al-Kahf 18:47]
Say (O Muhammad SAW): “(Yes) verily, those of old, and those of later times. “All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. [Al-Waqiah 56:49-50]
You will witness unspeakable things on that day. A day that man will lose all his senses. A day whereby the pregnant woman will drop her load and not take a passing glimpse at the infant. The hair of a child who is pure from sin will turn grey from the intense horror he will witness.
O mankind! Fear your Lord and be dutiful to Him! Verily, the earthquake of the Hour (of Judgement) is a terrible thing. The Day you shall see it, every nursing mother will forget her nursling, and every pregnant one will drop her load, and you shall see mankind as in a drunken state, yet they will not be drunken, but severe will be the Torment of Allâh. [Al-Hajj 22:1-2]
Then how can you avoid the punishment, if you disbelieve, on a Day (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) that will make the children grey-headed? Whereon the heaven will be cleft asunder? His Promise is certainly to be accomplished. [Al-Muzzammil 73:17-18]
No one will come to your rescue. Your mothers who once suckled you will forsake you. Your fathers who once provided for you will turn his back on you. Your brother or sister who aided you will hold back their hands. Your wife/husband you confided in will not even glance at you. Your children whom you loved and cared for will abandon you.
Then, when there comes As-Sâkhkhah (the second blowing of the Trumpet on the Day of Resurrection) – That Day shall a man flee from his brother, And from his mother and his father, And from his wife and his children. Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. [Al-Abasa 80:33-37]
You will without hesitation or reluctance ransom all your wealth; ransom all your property and goods, everything you ever owned or enjoyed you will ransom just to escape this day. Yet on that day nothing will avail you accept the good you did in this life.
But those who answered not His Call (disbelieved in the Oneness of Allaah and followed not His Messenger Muhammad SAW), if they had all that is in the earth together with its like, they would offer it in order to save themselves (from the torment, but it will be in vain). For them there will be the terrible reckoning. Their dwelling – place will be Hell; – and worst indeed is that place for rest. [Ar-Rad 13:18]
“The kafir will be brought forth on the Day of Resurrection and it will be said to him. ‘Do you think that if you had an earthful of gold that you would be able to ransom yourself with it? He will say, “Yes”. It will be said to him, “I used to ask you for less than that.” [Sahih Bukhari]
We will all be divided into three groups, with our records in our hands, standing before Allaah.
And you (all) will be in three groups. So those on the Right Hand (i.e. those who will be given their Records in their right hands) — how (fortunate) will be those on the Right Hand! (As a respect for them, because they will enter Paradise). And those on the Left Hand (i.e. those who will be given their Record in their left hands) — how (unfortunate) will be those on the Left Hand? (As a disgrace for them, because they will enter Hell). And those foremost [(in Islâmic Faith of Monotheism and in performing righteous deeds) in the life of this world on the very first call for to embrace Islâm,] will be foremost (in Paradise). [Al-Waqiah 57:7-10]
This the Overwhelming Day. This is the Inveitable Event. The Day that man will either be successful and enter Paradise or the day that man will experience great loss and be thrown into the fire. Nothing will aid us on that Day except the good our hands have sent forth in this life and the mercy of Allaah.
We have been warned of this Great Day so PREPARE FOR IT!
