Honouring your parents

Amat Al-Kareem February 26, 2011 9

Importance of honouring one’s parents in Islam?

What is the importance of parents respect in light of the Qur’aan and Sunnah?

Praise be to Allaah.

The importance of honouring one’s parents is:

Firstly: It is obedience to Allaah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And We have enjoined on man to be good and dutiful to his parents” [al-‘Ankaboot 29:8]

And

“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour. And lower unto them the wing of submission and humility through mercy, and say: ‘My Lord! Bestow on them Your Mercy as they did bring me up when I was young’” [al-Israa’ 17:23]

In al-Saheehayn it is reported that Ibn ‘Abbaas said:

“The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was asked which deed is the best? He said, ‘Faith in Allaah and His Messenger, then honouring one’s parents…’”

And there are many other Aayat and Mutawaatir Ahaadeeth which say similar things.

Secondly: Obeying and honouring one’s parents is a means of entering Paradise, as it was reported in Saheeh Muslim from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“He is doomed, he is doomed, he is doomed.” It was said, “Who, O Messenger of Allaah?” He said, “The person whose parents, one or both of them, reach old age during his lifetime but he does not enter Paradise.” (Saheeh Muslim, 4627).

Al-Bukhaari (5971) and Muslim (2548) narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: A man came to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said:

Which of the people is most deserving of my good companionship? He said: “Your mother.” He said: Then who? He said: “Then your mother.” He said: Then who? He said: “Then your mother.” He said: Then who? He said: “Then your father.”

Thirdly: Respecting and honouring them brings friendship and love.

Fourthly: Respecting and obeying them is a way of showing gratitude to them because they are the ones who brought you into this world. You should also show gratitude towards them for bringing you up and taking care of you when you were young. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And We have enjoined on man (to be dutiful and good) to his parents” [Luqmaan 31:14]

Fifthly: If a person honours his parents this may be the cause of his own children honouring him. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Is there any reward for good other than good?’ [al-Rahmaan 55:60]

And Allaah knows best.

Through disobedience towards our parents, our failing in looking after them, not only when they're old, but when they're sick, we do nothing but earn the anger of Allaah. Through just this one act, we prepare for our a souls a wretched future. Through this one act of disobedience, we deny our parents of their rights, we fail in our duty towards them, we hurt and anger them, we disobey the messenger of Allaah salAllaahu alayhi wa sallam, and we disobey Allaah and we earn His anger and wrath. SubhanAllaah. Not just that, but on the Day of Resurrection, where every soul shall see what it has earned, where parents will flee from their children, a brother ftom his mother, a man from his wife, caring for none but themselves, that Day, our parents shall get their due. Either through taking our good deeds, or giving us their evil ones for what we did to them in this world. And who can stand and say they have enough for someone to be able to take from them on that Day? By Allaah not a single person enters Jannah because of his own deeds, but rather through the Mercy of his Lord. And Allaah is the Most Just.

I pray I take heed from my words, this was nothing but typing out advice to myself.

    i have a question please insha'allah:

if one is engaged in a sunnah prayer, and their parents call them, are they obliged to respond or should they continue praying and see to their parents once they've finished?

    jazaakumullahu khairan

Answering the call to your parents is ob-li-ga-to-ry and thus precedence is taken in responding to them by stopping the sunnah/voluntary prayer, unless you can make them aware and they will not mind, in which case you should quicken the prayer. Jurayj's mother made a du'a against her son (Jurayj) when he did not respond from salaah – her du'a was accepted. ['Umdah class].

Such is the importance of the parents in the sight of Allaah.

ya -, may Allaah love you and envelope you in His mercy and blessings, may He guide to you that which pleases Him, making the path of sin difficult for you and the path of good deeds easy for you, may He grant you the best of this life and the best of the next. I pray that Allaah unites us in Jannah. Aameen thumma aameen.
