Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem
All Praise is due to Allaah, Lord of mankind and jinn, and may the peace and blessing of Allaah be upon Muhammad, His slave and Final Messenger.
Allaah, Exalted be He, says:
“You (O Muhammad) will not find any people who believe in Allaah and the Last Day, making friendship with those who oppose Allaah and His Messenger (Muhammad), even though they were their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their kindred (people). For such He has written Faith in their hearts, and strengthened them with Rooh (proofs, light and true guidance) from Himself”
Allaah, Exalted be He, also says:
“And incline not towards those who do wrong lest the Fire should touch you…”
He also said:
“O you who believe! Take not My enemies and your enemies (i.e. disbelievers and polytheists) as friends, showing affection towards them, while they have disbelieved in what has come to you of the truth.”
It was related from Ibn Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:
“Do not turn towards them (the wrong doers) altogether in love, tender words and friendship.”
Ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allaah (may the peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“Everyone will be with those whom he loves.”
[Bukhaari and Muslim]
Based on this, it is not permissible for the Muslim to feel any love in his heart towards the enemies of Allaah who are in fact his enemies too.
It is extremely astonishing how a Muslim that believes in Allaah and the last day can love people who are disbelievers that don’t believe in Allaah and the last day and don’t forbid what Allaah forbids and don’t practice the religion of truth and also refuse the religion of Islam. This does not mean that a person should pick up arms against them or curse them excessively, for cursing excessively is not a characteristic of a muslim, but rather the muslim should abhor the disbeliever for his disbelief and denial of Allaah. However, it is permissible to treat them with kindness in the hope that through this their hearts will be softened and they will find the right path, and a true believer will see no contradiction in this. But if the muslim sees no hope in the disbeliever becoming muslim, then the muslim should treat him as he should be treated.
And Allaah knows best.
