Your Mirror

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem

All praise is due to Allaah, the Lord of the Worlds, the Mighty, the Majestic and may the peace and blessings of Allaah, Exalted be He, be showered upon our Beloved Messenger, Muhammad ibn Abdullaah.

A short reminder; I pray it is of benefit to the author and to the reader.

The Messenger of Allaah said:

“A believer is a mirror to his brother. A believer is a brother of a believer: he protects him against any danger and guards him from behind.”

[Bukhaari]

It is difficult to see your own mistakes, and often we, as humans, need them to be pointed out to us.

When we read the above hadeeth, we all assume, and rightfully so, that we are our brothers’ mirrors because we see his mistakes, we correct them and we see the sins he commits, possibly out of ignorance (or not), and advise him. Just as if he were to see his own mistakes and sins through a mirror, he would also correct them.

However, that is not the only way a believer is a mirror.

When you carry on with your day to day lives, you see your brothers and sisters fall into mistakes or sins that you dislike and you despise, therefore you yourself should strive to abstain from such actions or holding such characteristics. Take heed from the mistakes of others and correct your own self through this. And in this way, this brother or this sister becomes your mirror!

It was said to ‘Eesa (peace be upon him):

“Who taught you?” He said: “No one taught me; I saw the ignorance of the ignorant as something bad and I avoided it.”

SubhanAllaah, a beautiful reminder. Jazakillaahu Khayran.

I remember hearing a talk a few years back and the ustaadh saying something along the lines of…

When with the people, observe them, when you see characteristics you like and are good, try and imitate them, and when you see characteristics you dislike and are displeasing to the people, then be weary that you do not do the same (for when you do it, it will also be disliked and displeasing to the people).
